Canonical renews the Ubuntu certification programme

This article was last updated 9 years ago.

June 8, Taipei: Canonical, the company behind Ubuntu, announced today that it has extended and revised its Hardware Certification Programme for Original Equipment Manufacurers (OEMs) and Original Design Manufacturers (ODMs). Canonical have made the changes to better align certification with the manufacturer’s needs and also to encompass the broader spectrum of user cases for Ubuntu as it becomes a more established part of the OEM ecosystem.

“As Ubuntu is increasingly becoming an option for many OEMs on many devices, we have been very pleased to extend the programme to better suit their growing requirements” said Chris Kenyon, VP OEM Services & Alliances, at Canonical. “The programme is simplified and will be more easily understood by the industry as they look to embrace and profit from Ubuntu as part of their product range”.

The Hardware Certification Programme serves as a starting point for OEMs who want to become authorised to pre-install Ubuntu and to redistribute the Ubuntu trademarks on a commercial basis.

The Hardware Certification Programme now has three elements:

  • ‘Ubuntu Certified’ allows manufacturers to submit systems to be certified to Canonical’s testing facility, where certification testing and validation is performed by Canonical engineers.
  • ‘Ubuntu Ready’ (formerly ‘Ubuntu Compatible’) allows manufacturers to self-test using a checkbox test suite, and submit results to Canonical for validation.
  • ‘Ubuntu Compatible Component’ is a new service whereby a component internal to a system has been validated as Ubuntu Certified by Canonical.

The programme continues to grow in importance and is already in use by a number of manufacturers globally, now including Lenovo’s ThinkPad laptops and ThinkCentre desktops.
